Hi i've got a 86 ranger 373v and the bilge pump keeps blowing the fuse. i'm thinking its a bad ground but not forsure. has anyone had similar issues or know an easy way to check the grounds or trouble shoot the issue.. I have a1996 bayliner 2355 ciera. the bilge pump is blowing fuses. i assume it will need replaced. the old pump is - answered by a verified marine mechanic the bilge pump is blowing fuses. i assume it will need replaced. scuff it, and then take the bottom plate of the new bilge pump and epoxy that to the boats bottom. once that is done. I prefer the 3-wire pumps with internal mechanical float switch myself, sometimes debris and even fishing line can get inside the impeller causing the fuse to blow. always use the correct size rated fuse otherwise a destructive bilge fire can be the result..
Make sure that you are using the correct size fuse when you troubleshoot a bilge pump. if it keeps blowing fuses frequently, you may be using a fuse that's too small to handle the job. also make sure that you clean out the strainer of your bilge pump regularly.. Re: stuck rule bilge pump blowing fuses? first rule if fuse blows, take the pump apart and clear the carp out of the strainer, and free off the impeller, they will pull off the shaft, and then you will find all kinds of fibre's causing the problem, hook them out with a fine screwdriver.. Fuses and circuit breakers should be placed as close to the power source as practical (within 7 inches of wire length per the american boat and yacht council). if you put the fuse next to the bilge pump instead of near the battery, the entire length of wire between the battery and fuse is not protected..
